Size 8 – 41 or 42?

Has anyone else noticed that a size 8 is sometimes a size 41 and sometimes a size 42?
I was always a size 8 up to about 5 years ago but then suddenly sizes seemed to get smaller! At Office, Faith, Schuh, Dune, New Look, Moda in Pelle, Top Shop and Jones Bootmaker size 8 is a European 41. But at Next, Marks and Spencer, Debenhams and Clarks it’s a 42.
It really bugs me having to ask for a size 9! I love shoes from trendy high street shops like Office but their size 9 range is really limited.
